What is nail fungus?

Nail fungus develops when fungi infect the toes or fingers. Symptoms include discolored nails, thickening of the nails, separation of the nail from the skin, and sometimes pain. The most common cause of nail fungus is the Athlete’s Foot, which often makes its way inside via a shoe and grows in warm, moist conditions around a person’s toes. Fungi can also enter through open wounds in your skin.
